أعلن النائب الأمريكي عن ولاية فلوريدا، ماكسويل أليخاندرو فروست، تعرّضه لاعتداء جسدي من قبل رجل أطلق عبارات عنصرية وهدده بالترحيل على يد الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، وذلك خلال حضوره حفلاً ضمن فعاليات مهرجان صاندانس السينمائي في ولاية يوتا.
اعتداء على نائب في الكونغرس
وقال فروست (29 عاماً) في منشور على منصة «إكس» مساء السبت: «تعرضتُ الليلة الماضية لاعتداء من رجل في مهرجان صاندانس، قال لي إن ترمب سيقوم بترحيلي قبل أن يلكمني في وجهي».
عبارات عنصرية
وأضاف أن المعتدي كان يصرخ بعبارات عنصرية أثناء فراره وهو في حالة سُكر، مؤكداً أن السلطات ألقت القبض عليه وأنه بخير.
وبحسب صحيفة «الغارديان» يُعد فروست أول أمريكي من أصول أفرو-كوبية وأول ممثل عن جيل «زد» يتم انتخابه لعضوية الكونغرس الأمريكي، وقد وجّه الشكر إلى أفراد الأمن في موقع الحفل وشرطة مدينة بارك سيتي على سرعة تعاملهم مع الحادثة.
القبض على المعتدي
من جانبها، أعلنت شرطة بارك سيتي في بيان رسمي أن المشتبه به، ويدعى كريستيان يونغ، تم توقيفه وتوجيه تهم «السطو المشدد واعتدائين بسيطين»، مع إمكانية تشديد العقوبة عند صدور الحكم.
وأوضحت مسؤولة التواصل المجتمعي في الشرطة الملازم دانييل سنيلسون، أن عناصر الأمن استجابوا لبلاغ حول الحادث بعد منتصف الليل بقليل في صالون «هاي ويست».
وأضافت أن التحقيقات أظهرت أن المتهم دخل حفلاً خاصاً من دون دعوة، بعد أن مُنع سابقاً من الدخول، ثم اعتدى داخل المكان على النائب فروست وعلى امرأة كانت من بين المدعوين.
تفاصيل الواقعة
وأكد فروست تفاصيل الحادثة رداً على تقرير لمجلة «فاريتي»، التي أفادت بأن الاعتداء وقع خلال حفل خاص نظمته وكالة المواهب العالمية CAA، وذكرت المجلة أن المعتدي صدم الحاضرين بتصريحات عنصرية داخل المكان، عبّر خلالها عن «فخره بكونه أبيض»، قبل أن يعتدي جسدياً على فروست عقب خروجه.
كما نقلت المجلة أن عدداً من الحاضرين شاهدوا النائب وهو يتعرض للكمة في وجهه قبل تدخل الأمن.
وفي تغريدة لاحقة، طمأن فروست متابعيه على حالته الصحية، قائلاً: «نحن نعيش أوقاتاً مخيفة، أرجوكم التزام الحذر، ولا تسمحوا لهؤلاء بإسكاتكم. إلى الأمام».
رد الأقلية الديمقراطية
من جهته، أعرب زعيم الأقلية الديمقراطية في مجلس النواب، حكيم جيفريز، عن صدمته إزاء الاعتداء، قائلاً: «ممتن لكونه بخير، لكنني مصدوم من وقوع هذا الاعتداء المروّع، يجب محاسبة الجاني بأقصى درجات الحزم».
وأضاف أن «خطاب الكراهية والعنف السياسي لا مكان لهما في الولايات المتحدة، وأن الكتلة الديمقراطية في مجلس النواب تقف بالكامل إلى جانب ماكسويل فروست».
U.S. Representative from Florida, Maxwell Alejandro Frost, announced that he was physically assaulted by a man who shouted racist remarks and threatened him with deportation by President Donald Trump, during his attendance at an event as part of the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.
Assault on a Congressman
Frost (29 years old) said in a post on the platform "X" on Saturday night: "I was assaulted last night by a man at the Sundance Festival, who told me that Trump would deport me before punching me in the face."
Racist Remarks
He added that the assailant was shouting racist remarks while fleeing in a state of intoxication, confirming that authorities arrested him and that he is fine.
According to The Guardian, Frost is the first Afro-Cuban American and the first representative from Generation Z to be elected to the U.S. Congress, and he thanked the security personnel at the event and the Park City Police for their swift response to the incident.
Arrest of the Assailant
For its part, the Park City Police announced in an official statement that the suspect, named Christian Young, was arrested and charged with "aggravated assault and two simple assaults," with the possibility of enhanced penalties upon sentencing.
Community outreach officer Lieutenant Daniel Snellson explained that security personnel responded to a report about the incident shortly after midnight at the "High West" salon.
She added that investigations revealed that the accused entered a private party without an invitation after being previously barred from entry, and then assaulted Representative Frost and a woman who was among the guests inside the venue.
Details of the Incident
Frost confirmed the details of the incident in response to a report from Variety magazine, which stated that the assault occurred during a private party organized by the global talent agency CAA. The magazine mentioned that the assailant shocked attendees with racist statements made inside the venue, expressing his "pride in being white," before physically assaulting Frost as he exited.
The magazine also reported that several attendees witnessed the representative being punched in the face before security intervened.
In a later tweet, Frost reassured his followers about his health, saying: "We are living in scary times, please be cautious, and do not let these people silence you. Onward."
Response from the Democratic Minority
For his part, Democratic Minority Leader in the House, Hakeem Jeffries, expressed his shock at the assault, saying: "I am grateful that he is okay, but I am shocked by this horrific attack; the perpetrator must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
He added that "hate speech and political violence have no place in the United States, and the Democratic caucus in the House stands fully with Maxwell Frost."
