In what is considered the most significant step since the outbreak of the Syrian war nearly 14 years ago, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres begins an official visit to Syria today (Saturday), marking the first visit by a UN Secretary-General in office since the conflict erupted in 2011, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions of Syrians.
The visit comes at a time when Syria is witnessing a new political phase following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.
Guterres had previously described the end of Assad's rule as a "ray of hope" for Syria and the region, expressing his anticipation for a new phase characterized by stability.

The UN Secretary-General is scheduled to meet with Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara, and Guterres will hold meetings with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaybani and several senior government officials, along with representatives from civil society organizations, according to UN spokesperson Stefan Dujarric.
Dujarric confirmed that Guterres will emphasize during his meetings that Syria has a real opportunity "not only to recover from the effects of the conflict but also to lay the foundations for a more stable, inclusive, and prosperous future for all Syrians."
Guterres's visit to Damascus is expected to last several days, although the UN has not announced the full agenda for the visit.
This visit comes just weeks after two explosive devices detonated near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron stayed during his visit to Damascus, which was the first visit by a head of state from the European Union to Syria since the fall of the Assad regime, casting a shadow over that visit.
Syria's Return to the International Stage
The new Syrian government led by Ahmad al-Shara is seeking to rebuild the country's international relations and revive the economy after nearly 14 years of war and decades of isolation imposed by the Assad family's rule.
Diplomatic Opening and International Transformations
Ahmad al-Shara leads a coalition of opposition Islamic factions that overthrew the Assad regime in December 2024. Since taking office, the Syrian government has worked to expand its diplomatic relations beyond the traditional allies of the previous regime, primarily Russia and Iran.
Last year, al-Shara became the first Syrian president to participate in the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York since 1967.
Relations with the United States have also seen notable developments, as Washington lifted most of the extensive economic sanctions imposed on Syria, and earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump informed his Syrian counterpart of his country's intention to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Guterres is expected to deliver a speech before the new Syrian parliament on Monday and will visit the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan, which has overseen the buffer zone between Syrian and Israeli forces for decades.
This visit comes amid ongoing tensions in southern Syria, after Israeli forces took control of new areas following the fall of the Assad regime, while Damascus demands their withdrawal and a return to the disengagement agreement signed in 1974.
