شهد منتجع في مدينة ساو بيدرو بولاية ساو باولو في البرازيل، حادثة مأساوية تحول فيها نشاط ترفيهي بسيط إلى كارثة إنسانية، حيث توفي أحد المتسابقين في مسابقة «الفم في البطيخ»، بعد أن اختنق بقطعة بطيخ أثناء مشاركته في المسابقة التي كانت جزءاً من برنامج الترفيه اليومي للنزلاء.
ووفقاً لوسائل إعلام برازيلية، توفي كارلوس سيراسوما (37 عاماً) بعدما تنافس مع خمسة نزلاء آخرين على تناول قطعة بطيخ كبيرة بأسرع وقت ممكن من على طاولة منخفضة، دون استخدام اليدين على الإطلاق وباستخدام الفم فقط، وكانت الجائزة متواضعة جداً؛ مجرد حصة من البطاطس المقلية.
وقالت زوجته كيمبرلي سانتوس التي كانت حاضرة في المكان، إن كارلوس بدأ المنافسة بحماس، لكنه سرعان ما توقف عن الحركة وأصبح رأسه منحنياً إلى الأمام، ولاحظ موظف الترفيه أن قطعة البطيخ الأخيرة سقطت على الطاولة، لكنه اكتشف أن كارلوس لم يعد يستجيب.
وحاول موظفو المنتجع إجراء الإنعاش القلبي الرئوي، ثم نقلوه حياً إلى وحدة الطوارئ في المدينة المجاورة، لكنه فارق الحياة لاحقاً.
وأكد تقرير الطب الشرعي أن سبب الوفاة هو الاختناق الميكانيكي بسبب انسداد مجرى الهواء بقطعة البطيخ، وسجلت الشرطة الواقعة «وفاة مشبوهة» في مركز شرطة ساو بيدرو، وتم دفن الجثمان في مدينة أراراس مسقط رأسه.
واتهمت الزوجة كيمبرلي إدارة المنتجع بالإهمال وعدم الاستعداد للتعامل مع الطوارئ، مشيرة إلى أن الطاولة المنخفضة جداً غير مناسبة لطوله البالغ 1.8 متر تقريباً، وساهمت في وضعية سيئة أدت إلى تفاقم الاختناق، وأعلنت نيتها رفع دعوى قضائية ضد المنتجع لضمان عدم تكرار مثل هذه الحوادث.
وأصدر المنتجع بياناً رسمياً يعبر فيه عن حزنه العميق، ويؤكد أنه فعّل جميع إجراءات الطوارئ فوراً، مع تقديم الدعم للعائلة، لكنه وصف الحادث بـ«وعكة مفاجئة» دون الإشارة صراحة إلى الاختناق.

Resort staff attempted to perform CPR and then transported him alive to the emergency unit in the nearby city, but he later passed away.
A forensic report confirmed that the cause of death was mechanical asphyxiation due to airway obstruction by a piece of watermelon, and the police recorded the incident as a "suspicious death" at the São Pedro police station, and the body was buried in the city of Araras, his hometown.
Wife Kimberly accused the resort management of negligence and lack of preparedness to handle emergencies, pointing out that the very low table was unsuitable for his height of about 1.8 meters, contributing to a poor position that exacerbated the choking, and announced her intention to file a lawsuit against the resort to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
The resort issued an official statement expressing its deep sorrow and confirming that it activated all emergency procedures immediately, while providing support to the family, but described the incident as a "sudden illness" without explicitly mentioning choking.
