رغم أن فيلم Sinners (سينرز) دخل التاريخ الأسبوع الماضي بعد أن أصبح أول فيلم يحصد 16 ترشيحاً لجوائز الأوسكار، فإن منافسه في موسم الجوائز One Battle After Another (معركة بعد أخرى) خرج متقدماً بفارق ضئيل في ترشيحات جوائز الأكاديمية البريطانية للأفلام (بافتا) التي أُعلنت اليوم (الثلاثاء).
وبحسب صحيفة «الغارديان» يتصدر فيلم بول توماس أندرسون، وهو كوميديا ذات طابع ثقافي مضاد، قائمة المنافسة بـ14 ترشيحاً، يليه فيلم مصاصي الدماء للمخرج رايان كوغلر بـ13 ترشيحاً.
وجاء في المرتبة التالية فيلما Marty Supreme وHamnet بـ11 ترشيحاً لكل منهما، بينما حصل Frankenstein وSentimental Value على ثمانية ترشيحات لكل فيلم.
مفاجآت بريطانية وحضور لافت
وحقق الفيلم البريطاني الكوميدي عن متلازمة توريت Swear مفاجأة لافتة بحصوله على خمسة ترشيحات، من بينها ترشيح أفضل ممثل لروبرت أرامايو، ونال فيلم الكوميديا والدراما الموسيقية البريطانية The Ballad of Wallis Island ثلاثة ترشيحات.
غياب الصدمات الكبرى
وجاءت قائمة الترشيحات هذا العام خالية إلى حد كبير من «الاستبعادات الصادمة»، ويُعزى ذلك جزئياً إلى أن «بافتا» تعتمد ستة مرشحين في فئات التمثيل بدلاً من خمسة في الأوسكار، ما أتاح المجال لأسماء بارزة مثل بول ميسكال عن فيلم Hamnet.
أما فيلم Wicked: For Good، الذي خرج خالي الوفاض من ترشيحات الأوسكار، فقد حقق حضوراً متواضعاً في «بافتا» بترشيحين في تصميم الأزياء وتصفيف الشعر والمكياج، دون أي ترشيحات لبطلتَيه سينثيا إريفو وأريانا غراندي.
ومن بين النجوم الذين غابوا عن الترشيحات أيضاً: جينيفر لورنس، جورج كلوني، سيدني سويني، دواين جونسون، جوليا روبرتس.
دي كابريو يعادل رقماً تاريخياً
ورغم أن ليوناردو دي كابريو يُعد المرشح الثاني الأوفر حظاً لجائزة أفضل ممثل بعد تيموثي شالاميه عن Marty Supreme، فإن ترشيحه السابع في هذه الفئة جعله يعادل رقماً قياسياً تاريخياً في «بافتا»، إلى جانب أسماء أسطورية مثل مايكل كين، دانيال داي لويس، لورنس أوليفييه، جاك ليمون.
وبالنظر إلى عمره وإنتاجه الفني المستمر، يبدو دي كابريو الأكثر ترجيحاً لتجاوز هذا الرقم مستقبلاً.
نجم صاعد من «صراع العروش»
ويُعد روبرت أرامايو الحصان الأسود في سباق أفضل ممثل. الترشيح منح دفعة قوية لمسيرة الممثل البالغ 33 عاماً، المعروف سابقاً بدور «نيد ستارك الشاب» في Game of Thrones، ويجسد أرامايو في I Swear شخصية الناشط الأسكتلندي الرائد في التوعية بمتلازمة توريت، جون ديفيدسون.
كما ينافس الفيلم على جوائز أفضل فيلم بريطاني، والسيناريو الأصلي، وأفضل ممثل مساعد (بيتر مولان)، وجائزة اختيار الممثلين.
الطريق ما زال طويلاً
من جانبها قالت رئيسة «بافتا» سارا بت إن نجاح هذه الأفلام يعكس شغف الجمهور بالقصص الإنسانية الصادقة التي تلامس التجربة الحياتية، مؤكدة أن هيمنة أفلام مثل Sinners وOne Battle After Another تشير إلى بحث المشاهدين عن نقاط تواصل في «عالم منقسم ومربك».
ورغم ميل الترشيحات هذا العام نسبياً لصالح الإنتاجات البريطانية، فإن أغلب المرشحين الرئيسيين في فئات التمثيل والإخراج ليسوا بريطانيين، كما أن اثنين فقط من المرشحين للإخراج ليسوا من البيض، وكانت كلوي تشاو المرأة الوحيدة بينهم.
وأقرت بت بأن النتائج «تُظهر أن الطريق لا يزال طويلاً أمام المخرجات»، مؤكدة أهمية الإجراءات التي تعتمدها «بافتا» منذ 2020 لضمان التنوع منذ مرحلة القوائم الطويلة.
مواعيد الحفل
ومن المقرر إقامة حفل جوائز «بافتا» في 22 فبراير، ويقدمه هذا العام آلان كومينغ خلفاً لديفيد تينانت، أما حفل الأوسكار فسيقام بعد ذلك بثلاثة أسابيع، في 15 مارس، ويقدمه للمرة الثانية كونان أوبراين.
Although the film Sinners made history last week by becoming the first film to receive 16 nominations for the Oscars, its competitor in the awards season, One Battle After Another, came out slightly ahead in the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) announced today (Tuesday).
According to The Guardian, Paul Thomas Anderson's film, a culturally counter-themed comedy, leads the competition with 14 nominations, followed by Ryan Coogler's vampire film with 13 nominations.
Next in line are the films Marty Supreme and Hamnet, each with 11 nominations, while Frankenstein and Sentimental Value received eight nominations each.
British Surprises and Notable Presence
The British comedy film about Tourette syndrome, Swear, achieved a remarkable surprise by receiving five nominations, including a Best Actor nomination for Robert Aramayo, while the British musical comedy-drama The Ballad of Wallis Island garnered three nominations.
Absence of Major Shocks
This year's nominations list is largely free of "shocking exclusions," which is partly attributed to BAFTA's use of six nominees in acting categories instead of five like the Oscars, allowing room for prominent names such as Paul Mescal for Hamnet.
Meanwhile, the film Wicked: For Good, which came away empty-handed from the Oscar nominations, had a modest presence at BAFTA with two nominations in costume design and hair and makeup, without any nominations for its leading ladies Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
Among the stars who were also absent from the nominations are: Jennifer Lawrence, George Clooney, Sydney Sweeney, Dwayne Johnson, and Julia Roberts.
DiCaprio Matches a Historic Record
Although Leonardo DiCaprio is considered the second most favored nominee for Best Actor after Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, his seventh nomination in this category has tied him with a historic record at BAFTA, alongside legendary names such as Michael Caine, Daniel Day-Lewis, Laurence Olivier, and Jack Lemmon.
Given his age and ongoing artistic output, DiCaprio seems most likely to surpass this number in the future.
Rising Star from Game of Thrones
Robert Aramayo is the dark horse in the Best Actor race. The nomination has given a strong boost to the 33-year-old actor's career, previously known for his role as "young Ned Stark" in Game of Thrones. In I Swear, Aramayo portrays the leading Scottish activist raising awareness about Tourette syndrome, John Davidson.
The film is also competing for Best British Film, Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Peter Mullan), and the SAG Award.
The Road is Still Long
For her part, BAFTA chair Sara Putt stated that the success of these films reflects the audience's passion for authentic human stories that resonate with life experiences, emphasizing that the dominance of films like Sinners and One Battle After Another indicates viewers' search for points of connection in a "divided and confusing world."
Despite this year's nominations leaning relatively in favor of British productions, most of the major nominees in the acting and directing categories are not British, and only two of the directing nominees are not white, with Chloe Zhao being the only woman among them.
Putt acknowledged that the results "show that the road is still long ahead for female directors," stressing the importance of the measures BAFTA has implemented since 2020 to ensure diversity from the longlist stage.
Award Ceremony Dates
The BAFTA Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 22, hosted this year by Alan Cumming, succeeding David Tennant, while the Oscars will take place three weeks later, on March 15, hosted for the second time by Conan O'Brien.
