بعد استقالة المدير التنفيذي توفيق تونسي، قررت إدارة نادي الوحدة إقالة المدير الفني سييرا، بسبب تذيل الفريق دوري الدرجة الأولى «يلو» إذ خسر الفريق 5 مواجهات من أصل 7 وحصد تعادلين، ليدخل الفريق في مرحلة الخطر ويحتاج لدعم معنوي ومادي لانتشال اللاعبين من الحالة النفسية التي يعانون منها في ظل عدم مقدرة إدارة النادي من إنقاذ الفريق من هذا الوضع، إذ كلفت المدرب المصري محمود عباس لإدارة الفريق وسيكون أول اختبار له أمام الطائي في حائل، وفي ظل تراجع مستوى الفريق لا يزال أعضاء شرف النادي بعيدين كل البعد عن الفريق، بعد أن هجرت جماهير النادي مدرجات ملعب الشرائع.
يذكر أن نادي الوحدة تعاقد مع «سييرا» في 20 أكتوبر 2022، ليحل محل «برونو أكرابوفيتش» بعقد استمر لموسمين، وخلال تلك الفترة، خاض القريق 25 مباراة. فاز في 8 منها، تعادل في 7، وخسر 10، وفي نهاية موسم 2022/2023، احتل الفريق المركز 13 في ترتيب دوري المحترفين برصيد 32 نقطة، ووصل إلى نهائي كأس الملك في الموسم نفسه، لكن خسر أمام الهلال بركلات الترجيح (بعد تعادل 1-1).
وفي هذا الموسم خسر الفريق بخماسية من العلا، ومن جده بهدفين مقابل هدف، أما الهزيمة الثالثة كانت أمام البكيرية بهدفين مقابل هدف، والهزيمة الرابعة جاءت من الدرعية بهدفين دون مقابل، و الخامسة من فريق أبها بثلاثة أهداف مقابل هدف، فما تعادل مع الفيصلي بهدفين، والباطن في الجولة السابعة بالنتيجة نفسها.
